DENTA Hosts Water Rescue 2026 to Enhance Student Preparedness for Aquatic Emergencies

South Tangerang, FIKES Online News, – Efforts to increase student capacity in dealing with emergency situations continue to be carried out by the Disaster and Emergency Nursing Team (DENTA). Through an activity entitled Denta's Trail: Water Rescue 2026, DENTA successfully held water safety and rescue training which took place on Saturday (12/9) at the Dompet Dhuafa Disaster Management Center (DMC) Hall and Situ Bungur Lake, Pondok Ranji, South Tangerang.

This activity was attended by 50 participants, consisting of 33 DENTA members, 17 external participants, one presenter, and two support team members. The training is designed to equip participants with basic knowledge and skills in dealing with emergency conditions in the aquatic environment, as well as increasing awareness of the importance of safety when carrying out activities around water.

The event was opened at 07.50 WIB by the Master of Ceremony (MC), followed by the reading of the holy verses of the Koran by M. Fahri Husaeni. A solemn atmosphere colored the opening session before participants entered the main series of activities.

Azmi Hafizh Azzami, the Organizing Committee Chair for DENTA 2026 Water Rescue, expressed his appreciation to all parties who contributed to the event's success. He also thanked the participants for dedicating their time to attend the training.

He noted that the opportunity to undergo water rescue training is not available to everyone. Therefore, participants were encouraged to make the most of this chance to enrich their knowledge and skills—assets that would prove valuable when facing emergencies in the community.

"I hope all participants engage earnestly in this activity, grasp the material presented, and are able to apply the knowledge gained when dealing with emergency situations in their own communities," said Azmi.

Meanwhile, DENTA’s Deputy Chairperson, Evelyna Munadilla, urged participants to approach the training with enthusiasm and discipline. She expressed hope that the material and experience gained would serve as a valuable resource for the participants, whether in organizational activities or when providing assistance to the public.

Moving into the core session, participants first took a pre-test to gauge their initial understanding of water safety and rescue. The event then proceeded with a presentation by Mochamad Syaiban from the Dompet Dhuafa Disaster Management Center (DMC).

During the session, participants received a comprehensive overview covering water safety concepts, basic safety components, safety protocols for various aquatic environments, emergency management, self-rescue principles, and an introduction to the equipment used in rescue operations.

Participants showed great enthusiasm during the interactive discussion and Q&A session. Topics such as victim evacuation procedures, safety standards, and rescue techniques for specific conditions drew significant interest.

Following the theory session, the activity moved to the area beneath the DMC Hall for practical sessions introducing water rescue equipment. Here, participants were introduced to gear commonly used in rescue operations, including inflatable boats, lifebuoys, paddles, safety helmets, air pumps, throw bags, flip lines, and safety whistles. In addition to understanding the function of the equipment, participants also had the opportunity to practice the technique of throwing a rescue line to a victim. This exercise was a key focus in enhancing fundamental rescue capabilities—specifically "throw rescue" skills, which are frequently employed during water-based emergencies.

Following the equipment familiarization session, participants returned to the hall for a post-test to evaluate their understanding of the material. The event then proceeded with the presentation of certificates and the conclusion of the classroom session before moving on to field practice.

The highlight of the event took place at Situ Bungur Lake, where participants engaged in simulations and hands-on water rescue practice. To ensure safety and training effectiveness, participants were divided into three groups.

Before the practical exercises began, all participants were required to warm up to minimize the risk of injury or cramping while in the water. Each group had the opportunity to practice boat handling, victim evacuation techniques, and rescue rope throwing skills in a real-world setting.

The training atmosphere was dynamic as participants took turns performing rescue simulations. Guided by experienced instructors, they learned how to respond to emergencies quickly, safely, and effectively. Beyond technical skills, these simulations honed their teamwork, communication, and decision-making abilities under pressure.

During the approximately one-hour field practice session, participants operated rescue boats, executed victim evacuation techniques, and applied the safety procedures learned during the theory session.

Once all practical activities concluded, participants returned to the DMC to rest, freshen up, and enjoy lunch together. The event wrapped up with the distribution of appreciation stickers and preparations for the participants' departure.

This activity also demonstrates DENTA’s commitment to enhancing the competence of its members and the public in the fields of disaster management and emergency response.

By organizing this training, DENTA reaffirms its role as an organization actively dedicated to building the capacity of nursing students to handle various emergency situations, including disasters and accidents in aquatic environments. (PN/ZR)
