Fighting TB in Parigi Baru: UIN Jakarta Student Innovation Through the SEMAR TBC Program

FIKES Online News - The number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in Parigi Baru Village, South Tangerang, has become a serious concern for a group of Public Health students from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Based on field data, the number of TB cases in 2024 was 23, then decreased to 11 cases in 2025. Although this figure is small, intervention measures remain essential, especially in neighborhood unit (RW) 05, which has the highest number of cases.

Interestingly, based on the Rapid Epidemiology Survey (SEC) and in-depth interviews with residents, a unique root cause was identified: the community's lack of awareness of the TB cadres in their neighborhood.

"It's understandable that the community doesn't recognize the TB cadres, as there is only one in Parigi Village. Furthermore, the cadres have so far focused on providing medication assistance to diagnosed patients," explained the person in charge of the Parigi Community Health Center's Tuberculosis Program during a discussion (January 27, 2025).

Based on the data collected, it can be seen that TB cases in the Parigi Baru area are still a problem with the number of cases in 2023 as many as 21 cases, then increasing to 23 cases in 2024. Although there was a significant decrease in cases in 2025, namely 11 cases, but this number requires appropriate intervention steps. The highest number of cases is in the RW 05 area, this is because RW 05 is the largest area in Parigi Baru Village with the largest population.

In response to this challenge, an innovation called "SEMAR TBC" (Healthy Community Responsive to Tuberculosis) was born. This program went beyond providing standard health education, but creatively packaged it through a digital "screen tancap" (outdoor screen). Students invited residents to watch a video introducing TB cadres to help them better understand these previously "hidden" figures.

This visual education was also broadcast on the official Instagram account and on the information screens at the Parigi Community Health Center (Puskesmas). The goal was clear: to disseminate information about the cadres' presence to all levels of society.

The program's activities achieved the desired results, as evidenced by the community attendance exceeding the target. Based on pre- and post-test results, there was a significant increase in community knowledge about TB and the presence of TB cadres in their neighborhoods. Residents now not only have a better understanding of TB but also know who to report symptoms to.

Through the SEMAR TBC program, UIN Jakarta students hope to strengthen the synergy between residents and cadres. By eliminating the reluctance to consult, it is hoped that the chain of TB transmission in Parigi Baru can be completely broken. (PBL Group 12)
