Guest Lecture from Bangladesh: Health Promotion Strategies to Address Health Problems in Other Countries
Online Fikes News– On December 19, 2024 at 09.00 WIB-11.00 WIB, the Public Health Study Program of FIKES UIN Jakarta, especially the Health Promotion Program Management Course, invited guest lecturers from Bangladesh. Mrs. Riastuti Kusuma Wardani, MKM, Ph.D as an effective lecturer of Health Promotion Program Management Course deliberately invited Dr. Shagahan to give an overview of health promotion in Bangladesh as one of the countries with the largest Muslim population after Indonesia and a country that will just change its status to a developing country. Dr. Md. Shahgahan Miah is an Associate Professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Department of Anthropology, Bangladesh. Dr. Shagahan explained to students health promotion strategies in an effort to overcome maternal and child health problems. As stated earlier, the purpose of inviting guest lecturers from abroad is for students to get an overview of the implementation of health promotion in other countries and its management.
For 2 hours or 160 minutes, students gained a lot of insight into how Bangladesh is making efforts in overcoming maternal and child health problems. Promotive and preventive efforts are the priorities of health efforts implemented by Bangladesh. A hierarchical socio-cultural approach from the level of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities/countries is used as a basis for designing health promotion strategies. Myths, beliefs, and culture of people in some areas of Bangladesh are challenging in implementing health promotion. Therefore, it is important before designing a health promotion program to conduct an assessment related to the determinants of community behavior towards maternal and child health. Mothers and children are the primary targets of health promotion, while the family, and the surrounding environment are secondary targets, and finally, community organizations and the Government are the tertiary targets. Health promotion efforts are organized by Bangladesh on an ongoing basis.
The enthusiasm of students for the material presented by Dr. Shagahan can be seen from the many questions and not all of them have been answered due to limited time. The time difference is a challenge for online lectures by inviting foreign lecturers. However, students were given the opportunity to discuss directly with Dr. Shagahan via email. Chintia, a health promotion specialization student of the Class of 2022, moderated the course of the lecture. The English of students who are good enough to support lectures with guest lecturers from Bangladesh runs smoothly and achieves the expected goals. A guest lecture by Dr. Shagahan from Bangladesh was the closing of the Health Promotion Program Management Course in First Semester 2024/2025.
