International Collaboration Adjunct Professor of Pharmacy Study Program UIN Jakarta held a Public Lecture Introduction to Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics with Prof. Gerard Lee from the University of San Carlos
Fikes Online News – The Pharmacy Study Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has held a Public Lecture with the speaker Prof. Gerard Lee L. See, Ph.D., a professor at the School of Health Care Professions, University of San Carlos, Philippines with expertise in the fields of Drug Development, Drug Delivery, Pharmacokinetics, and Nanotechnology. In this public lecture Prof. Gerard provided material related to "Introduction to Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics".

The event began with remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. apt. Zilhadia, M.Sc., who emphasized the importance of pharmacists having a thorough understanding of biopharmaceuticals. The lecture was attended by lecturers and students from the Pharmacy study program in their third, fifth, and seventh semesters.
In his lecture, Prof. Gerard explained biopharmaceuticals and pharmacokinetics. He emphasized the two main pillars of pharmacology:
- Pharmacokinetics, which relates to what the body does to a drug through the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination.
- Pharmacodynamics, which relates to what the drug does to the body (response).
He detailed that the correct drug dosage must always be within the therapeutic window, which is above the Minimum Effective Concentration (MEC) to produce an effect, but below the Minimum Toxic Concentration (MTC) to avoid toxic effects. Another important aspect highlighted was the need for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) supported by pharmacokinetic mathematical models, as well as the selection of appropriate drug administration routes, such as parenteral administration to avoid first-pass metabolism in the liver. The discussion session, moderated by apt. Ofa Suzanti Betha M.Si, demonstrated the audience's enthusiasm throughout the session. Active participation in the discussion reflected the high level of interest in biopharmaceuticals and pharmacokinetics.
