Studium Generale UIN Jakarta: Uniting Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tibbun Nabawi in Harmony
FIKES News Online– The Pharmacy Study Program of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta once again held a public lecture or studium generale which this time raised the theme "Perspectives of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tibbun Nabawi - In Harmony." Taking place at the M.K. Tajudin Auditorium, this event was attended by academics consisting of lecturers, students, and education staff who were enthusiastic about broadening their horizons about traditional medicine that is in line with Islamic values. Wednesday (6/25/2025)
The event was opened with remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Apt. Zilhadia, M.Si, who delivered a reflective message to the participants. "By listening to the material here, it is the same as being grateful," he said. He emphasized that gratitude for the opportunity to learn is the first step to opening the door to true knowledge and health. This public lecture is an important space to introduce two great traditions of medicine—Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Tibbun Nabawi—which actually have the same basic principles, namely maintaining body balance and not causing harm.
The material in this public lecture was presented by Drs. I. Yongky Sugiarto, Apt. S.Tr.Kes., who is a renowned Chinese Medicine Expert and Pharmacist. In the presentation of the material, it was conveyed that both TCM and Tibbun Nabawi have harmonious spiritual values. TCM upholds the principle of “Bu Shang Ren” or not harming the body, which is in line with the Islamic principle of la dhara wa la dhirar (do not harm and do not be harmed). The main modalities of TCM such as acupuncture, herbs, Qi Gong therapy, Tuina massage, and diet based on the theory of the five elements have been used for thousands of years. Meanwhile, Tibbun Nabawi emphasizes the use of natural ingredients such as honey, habbatussauda, and various sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in maintaining health. Both approaches emphasize the importance of disease prevention through good diet, body energy balance, and strong spiritual connections.
In addition to discussing the philosophical side, this public lecture also provides an in-depth explanation of acupuncture points in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The speaker explained that each acupuncture point is connected to a specific organ in the body and functions to balance vital energy or Qi. Interestingly, this session is not only theoretical, but also equipped with direct practice. The speaker gave a live acupuncture demonstration to several willing participants, thus providing real experience and a deeper understanding of how this technique is applied in the real world. This practice was enthusiastically welcomed by the participants because it provided a direct picture of the effectiveness and basic techniques of acupuncture.
Several students who volunteered in the demonstration session admitted to feeling the effects of acupuncture practiced by Drs. I. Yongky Sugiarto, Apt., S.Tr.Kes. just a few moments after the needles were removed. This experience shows that the technique of puncturing the right meridian points can trigger a rapid response from the body—from a feeling of relaxation, reduced pain, to smoother blood circulation. This confirms the potential of acupuncture as an effective and safe therapy when performed by trained practitioners.
The discussion session was interactive, with participants asking questions about acupuncture for. Students admitted to gaining a new perspective in viewing traditional medicine from the lens of Islamic science and Eastern culture. This public lecture was closed with a prayer together by all participants.
Through this event, the Pharmacy Study Program of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta hopes to open new insights regarding cross-science that combines the principles of traditional Chinese medicine and Tibbun Nabawi. This is part of an effort to create better health services that are in accordance with Islamic values in the midst of modern society. (MM/zr)
